Introduction to the interview with Claudio Gonella

Claudio Gonella

The interview took over several afternoons. We explored his photo archive and spoke about his life, work, and hobbies. Claudio was a successful fish exporter and businessman, but also an excellent master chef. Although he no longer works due to his age, he remains a figure many locals remember as a prominent personality.

His archive was filled with incredibly fascinating photos, making it truly difficult to select the most captivating ones. These images cover a wide range of topics, from fishing and the history of Jesolo to well-known figures from culture, politics, and sports, as well as moments from his exotic travels. Claudio Gonella is also an exceptional storyteller. Each of his stories brought the photographs to life, giving them new dimensions and providing me with truly rich material to work with.

If it seems that I am praising Claudio too much, it is important to acknowledge that every person has their strengths and weaknesses. Nonetheless, it is always deeply enriching to meet such a strong and interesting personality, which Claudio Gonella undoubtedly is.

Turning off the main road to the house by the river feels like stepping into another world. A gravel path leads to a magnificent wrought iron gate, beyond which stands a beautifully restored Italian residence, thoughtfully redesigned for the comfort of its owners. The house is framed by a natural mosaic-tiled courtyard where BauBau, the loyal dog, and Silvestro, the cat, welcome guests warmly. Standing at the entrance is Claudio Gonella, smiling and full of energy.

The vitality and energy he exudes are truly admirable. Meeting a person like him is always interesting and, in many ways, enriching. „Never give up, and if something doesn’t work out, start again from the beginning“—these are the principles he lives by, and I am grateful for the opportunity to meet him in person.

House

CG describes his house as the most beautiful in all of Italy. While I haven’t seen every Italian home, I must admit it’s truly unique. Massive wooden trusses, exposed masonry, beautiful open fireplaces, and a distinctively designed kitchen showcase the traditional Italian countryside aesthetic, all crafted with timeless materials and impeccable style.

As is common throughout Italy, there’s a palpable sense of design, harmony, and elegance in the combination of materials and colours. The hallway, adorned with a stunning Murano glass chandelier, exudes sophistication. The walls feature oil paintings that celebrate local themes—nature, the sea, fishing, and faith.

A Personal Reflection

Every corner of this house tells a story, with photographs and artefacts of his children prominently displayed. These pieces are a testament to his deep connection with his family, despite their prolonged separation. When Claudio speaks of his children, his demeanour shifts from that of a strong, composed businessman to a man marked by sorrow. This deeply personal topic remains, as he calls it, „the 13th room“ of his life—a space of profound and private pain.

Jesolo countryside

The house is situated in a stunning natural setting at the edge of Jesolo, surrounded by fields, meadows, and a tranquil canal that offers a direct route to Venice by boat. This idyllic location perfectly captures the charm of the Venetian countryside, blending the serenity of nature with a touch of tourism.

This unique setting makes the house an exceptional place, where nature, tradition and harmony are.

This interview was fascinating from many perspectives, and the opportunity to explore such an architecturally remarkable house with beautiful surroundings was one of them.
