Ospedale dell’Angelo: A Unique Hospital in Mestre
Ospedale dell’Angelo and a Sense of Wonder
When I first entered Ospedale dell’Angelo in Mestre, I was immediately struck by an unexpected sense of wonder. It is certainly not just an ordinary hospital. From the very first moment, it is clear that the architect worked with extraordinary sensitivity and consideration for the patients.
The hospital’s atrium resembles a vast botanical garden with beautiful views, pathways, and bridges. Upon entering the atrium, you are greeted by a very impressive statue of an angel, the patron of this hospital, which bears his name. The statue of the angel was donated to the hospital by Venetian architect Bruno Scarpa, who explained that in this context, it does not have a religious significance but refers to the symbolic value of angels as protectors.
In the hospital grounds amidst the greenery, there is also a grand piano that anyone can play. If you come to the hospital as a companion, you certainly won’t be bored while waiting. You can take an exploratory walk and enjoy views of the greenery from different angles or heights. If you don’t feel like walking, you can view the greenery from the local café.
Architectural Gem
The project is the work of architects Alberto Altieri and Emilio Ambaszea and is characterized on one hand by the presence of a large glass window, which also serves to dampen external noise inside the department rooms, and on the other hand by hanging terraces.
Construction of the Ospedale dell’Angelo began in 2004, and by 2008 it welcomed its first patients. It is considered the most technologically advanced healthcare facility in Italy and one of the most modern in Europe. This hospital is also referred to as the first green hospital in the world.
It consists of a glass inpatient block that emerges from a more extensive service and outpatient block covered with greenery. The 30-meter high and 200-meter long entrance hall is built as a winter garden. It is full of numerous plant species, such as ficus, palms, and ivies. The area was designed to create an optimal microclimate for the plants present.
About half of the hospital’s patients can see into it from their rooms. It covers an area of 152,000 square meters. The building has seven above-ground and two underground floors. The complex also includes an emergency room, an advanced surgical facility, and a proton therapy center.
The hospital represents a perfect blend of modern architecture and nature, creating a pleasant and healing environment for both patients and their visitors or companions. The emphasis on greenery and innovative design makes this hospital a truly unique healthcare facility.

Ospedale dell’Angelo: Comfort and Peace for Patients
Patient rooms are designed so that each has a direct view of the plants and trees outside the windows and also distant views of the surrounding fields. This design ensures that patients see greenery through the windows instead of other patients, contributing to their comfort and peace during their stay. There are a total of 680 beds, distributed in 350 rooms with private bathrooms.
Visitor Access
Visitors arriving by car enter the hospital through the central garden, a gently sloping green ramp under which all cars are parked. These low-level green roof areas with daylight are arranged into sedum and meadow lawns planted with strips of flowering shrubs and ground cover. They are connected by paved, furnished walkways.
