About Venice

Venice is the capital city of Veneto region in Italy. The city is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. City has no roads, has just canals.  The Grand Canal thoroughfare is lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. On the central square, Piazza San Marco stands St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower. The Gothic pink and white marble Doge’s Palace sits on the east side of the piazza. This is the area of  Carnival, where before the Christian holiday of Lent, partygoers dress in elaborate masks and costumes. Rialto footbridge leads to a market.

In history was Europe’s first major glassmaking center. During the 15th century, Murano glassmakers created cristallo, which was almost transparent and considered the finest glass in the world. Murano glassmakers also developed a white colored glass that looked like porcelain. They later became Europe’s finest makers of mirrors.

The San Giorgio Maggiore Island is located at a 5 minutes Vaporetto ride from San Zaccaria and it offers the best view towards Venice. Palladio’s Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, built in Venice in the years 1566 – 1610, modeled on Greek temples, rises in lonely grandeur on an island on the opposite side of the canal to the square of St. Mark.

Grand Canal

The Grand Canal is Venice’s main thoroughfare and also its deepest channel. On November 21, a remarkable event takes place at the Santa Maria della Salute church, where a boat bridge is created across the canal, after which pilgrims go to the church to celebrate. If you are planning a trip to romantic Venice, you will definitely not want to be transported on the canal, either by a local boat vaporetto or on a traditional gondola.

The S-shaped channel is formed by a river bed of the Brenta River, which flows under the shallow lagoon. Although the canal is more than 4 km long, only four bridges rise above it. Ponte Rialto Bridge is the oldest and most beautiful Venetian bridge that you can best see from the vaporetto. Ponte dell’Accademia is located next to the gallery and Ponte degli Scalzi at Venice Central Station. The youngest bridge is Ponte della Costituzione. It has only been built since 2008 and is built of steel, marble and glass.

Bridge of Sighs

The Bridge of Sighs. The enclosed bridge is made of white limestone, has windows with stone bars, passes over the Rio di Palazzo, and connects the New Prison to the interrogation rooms in the Doge’s Palace. The convicts who walked through to Doge’s Sala del Magistrato to hear the sentence that often meant their death had the last chance to see a glimpse of freedom from the bridge. In fact, the bridge owes its name to the English poet Lord Byron.Address: Piazza San Marco, 1, 30100 Venezia VE

Burano

Burano is an island in the Venetian Lagoon, near Torcello at the northern end of the Lagoon, known for its lacework and brightly colored homes. The colorful houses are a rarity here and it is said that this is a historical heritage of a former fishing village when bright colors made it easier for fishermen to return home in a thick fog that sometimes covered the lagoon.

Murano

Murano consists of several smaller islands connected by bridges. During the Middle Ages, glassmakers from Venice moved here because there was less risk of fire blaze on the island than in the city itself. Glass manufacturers had their workshops and dwellings here, subject to a strict ban on leaving the island. The production methods of noble Venetian glass must not have been revealed to anyone else. Anyone who would reveal a secret could even face the death penalty.
